Walden Returns To Area For Benefit Tournament

Former Washington State University football coach Jim Walden will be one of the guest celebrities when the Inland Northwest National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame stages its inaugural tournament June 30 at Indian Canyon Golf Course.

Walden followed a nine-year stint at WSU with eight years at Iowa State before resigning following the 1994 season.

The Inland Northwest chapter’s high school scholar-athlete program will benefit from proceeds generated by the tournament.

Lunch at 11:30 a.m. will precede a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost is $100, which includes golf, local chapter membership, half use of a golf cart, prizes and gifts.

Celebs display skills

The McKenna Wide World of Golf Celebrity Skills Challenge will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Fairways.

In conjunction with the Kenny Easley Celebrity Golf Classic, the event will pit celebrities against each other on the putting green and driving range and with iron play.

Celebrity athletes will include Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr., Easley, Dwight Hicks and Jacob Green. Among Hollywood celebrities will be John Ashton of “Beverly Hills Cop I” and its sequel, and Dan Chambers and Michael Beck of “Days of Our Lives.”

The skills challenge is free and open to the public.

Tournament scene

The Arc of Spokane’s seventh annual benefit tournament will be June 17 at Wandermere. Tee times begin at 7 a.m.

It’s a four-person scramble format in corporate and mixed divisions. Mixed teams must include two men and two women. Corporate teams can be any combination. The Oldsmobile Handicap system, based on handicaps or average scores, will be used.

The entry fee is $45 per person. Corporate fee is an additional $200. The deadline is Friday. First prize is a painting by local artist Carl Funseth valued at $1,500. Second prize is a weekend trip for two to San Francisco.

The Arc is a non-profit organization that aids persons with developmental disabilities in the Spokane area.

The Salvation Army’s Camp Gifford Golf Classic and dinner/ auction will expand to a two-day event for its ninth annual edition.

The dinner and auction, with former KXLY sports director Bud Nameck as MC, will be June 19 at the Red Lion Motor Inn. The 18-hole golf tournament will be the next day at Wandermere. Dinner and auction reservations are $20.

In eight years, the benefit has raised $125,000 for the Salvation Army’s youth summer camp.
