Quake Death Toll Rises To 1,160

The confirmed death toll from last week’s earthquake on Sakhalin Island rose to 1,160 on Sunday with the discovery of 97 more bodies in the rubble of the little oil town of Neftegorsk.

Authorities think 500 bodies still remain in the ruins, news reports said.

Rescue teams gave up hope of finding anyone else alive over the weekend and many searchers began leaving.
