Clashes Continue Near Burundi Capital

Compiled From Wire Services

Sporadic gunfire echoed for a sixth consecutive day Monday in a suburb of Burundi’s capital, where the army is trying to disarm extremist Hutus.

Burundi Radio, monitored by the British Broadcasting Corp., said the Kamenge suburb of the capital Bujumbura had been sealed off following six days of clashes between the predominantly Tutsi army and Hutu extremists.

The radio said Kamenge’s main street remained deserted and that one soldier had been wounded in the fighting.
