President Clinton said Monday night he’ll likely reject billionaire Ross Perot’s invitation to join Republican presidential candidates at a meeting of Perot’s United We Stand America organization in August.
“I’m inclined not to go …,” Clinton said in response to a question during a CNN interview with Larry King. “I don’t think the president should be politicking too soon. I have a job to do.”
Perot last month invited Clinton, all of his possible GOP challengers in 1996, an array of congressional leaders and the chairmen of the Republican and Democratic parties to attend the planned Aug. 11-13 gathering in Dallas.
The invitations were accepted by several GOP presidential contenders, including Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander and conservative commentator Pat Buchanan.
House Speaker Newt Gingrich has said he will attend.
