Barnes To Run For Re-Election

From Staff Reports

Orville Barnes wants another four years as a Spokane city councilman.

Barnes this week announced plans to run for re-election, saying that his experience as a councilman and businessman will help guide Spokane through the lean budget years ahead.

“Costs are continuing to increase with inflation, and revenues are expected to flatten out,” he said. “We need to find ways to provide services without increasing taxes.”

Barnes, 68, last week resigned from Goodale & Barbieri to devote more time to his job on the council. He plans to provide limited real estate consulting through his own firm, Barnes Management and Development Co.

Barnes started down the political road in 1968 when he won a seat on the District 81 School Board. In 1975, he was elected president of the Spokane Taxpayers Association.

After an 18-year hiatus, Barnes in 1991 jumped back into elected office when he narrowly defeated Bob Dellwo at the polls. Barnes sees the next four years as “much more challenging” than his past term.

“I feel that my experience as a councilman, combined with my knowledge of business, will be beneficial in helping solve some of the challenges ahead for our city government.”
