Miami Bats Ready For Rematch With Usc Hurricanes Augment Pitching In Time For Trojans, Who Top Fsu

Associated Press

For a team that relies on good pitching and defense, the Miami Hurricanes have picked an excellent time to become the hottest hitting team at the College World Series.

Miami (48-15), which batted .305 during the regular season, is hitting .411 through its first two games at the series. Top-seeded Cal State Fullerton is second at .375.

The Hurricanes face Southern California for the second time in the series today. The Trojans (47-20) ousted Florida State 16-11 on Tuesday, the third consecutive game the Seminoles scored at least nine runs.

Tuesday’s games

Tennessee 6, Stanford 2

Scott Schroeffel homered twice, and Todd Helton homered and had an RBI single as the Volunteers battered Stanford’s Nebraska-bred Todd Bartels in the elimination round. Bartels grew up near Omaha.

Tennessee scored a run in the first when Schroeffel singled, stole second and came home on Helton’s single.

Eighth-seeded Stanford (40-25) didn’t get anything going against Volunteers starter Ryan Meyers (10-2) until the fifth when Brian Dallimore singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Jon Schaeffer’s single.

Southern Cal 16, Florida State 11

Despite getting a series-record three home runs from J.D. Drew and two from Doug Mientkiewicz, Florida State was eliminated.

USC scored six runs in the first inning, highlighted by Greg Walbridge’s two-run double.

Geoff Jenkins hit his 21st homer of the year in the second. The Trojans stretched their lead in the third. Walter Dawkins singled and pinchhitter Brian Ponchak hit a double to score two and make the score 9-2.
