Law Student Charged With Shooting Into Car

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Gonzaga University law school student was arrested Wednesday after witnesses said he fired a bullet into their car near Ritzville, the Washington State Patrol said.

Jason Maughan, 24, 807 East Mission, was booked into the Adams County Jail for driving under the influence and reckless driving. He remained there late Thursday.

About 7 p.m. Wednesday, the driver of a blue Honda fired one bullet into a car that was parked on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 395, troopers said.

The victims - one later treated for minor cuts from shattered glass - immediately drove after the Honda, which had personalized plates that read “GU LAW.”

Two other witnesses flagged down WSP Trooper Fred Swan to report a Honda that was being driven erratically on the highway. They estimated it was travelling nearly 100 mph, said WSP spokesman Sgt. Chris Powell.

Troopers stopped Maughan in the Honda eastbound on Interstate 90 just after 8 p.m. at the Four Lakes exit. A loaded 10mm handgun was found inside his car, Powell said.
