Area Students Receive Teacher Scholarships

The following students have received a Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship, which was established by Congress to encourage talented students to become school teachers. They each will receive $5,000 per year for up to four years.

Kelly Meeker, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, will be a sophomore at Gonzaga University in the fall.

Shelley (Wood) Schueller, Pinehurst, Idaho, will be a junior at Lewis-Clark State College in the fall.

Julie Rich, Moscow, Idaho, will be a junior at the University of Idaho in the fall.

Michele Heyn, Wallace, will be a junior at the University of Montana in the fall.

Larry Vandervert, Spokane, has been invited to convene and chair a symposium on chaos theory in psychology for the 26th International Congress of Psychology to be held in Montreal in August 1996. He also has written an article entitled, “Chaos theory and the evolution of consciousness and mind: a thermodynamicholographic resolution,” describing how the human mind works, that will be printed in the July issue of New Ideas in Psychology. . Vandervert is the chair of the department of psychology at Spokane Falls Community College.

Tanya Williams, daughter of Stan and Tessa Williams, Spokane, has been appointed as the assistant to the attache in the U.S. Embassy in Rome. She is a graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School and New York University.

Marcella Slaughter, was honored recently at the Northwest Communication Association’s convention in Coeur d’Alene. Her paper was chosen as one of three finalists for Outstanding Paper of the Convention. She is a recent graduate of Willamette University with a degree in communications, vice president of Mortar Board and a member of Delta Gamma sorority.

The following students recently graduated from Central Washington University, Ellensburg: Andrew Gillespie, Chattaroy; Jennifer Nelson, Mead; Holly Patterson, Davenport, Wash.; Lachandra Carter, Sheri Sikes, Ann Weatherbee and Jennifer Thompson, all of Kennewick; Laurie Low, Loon Lake, Wash.; Kirsten Tainaka, Mattawa, Wash.; Jill Mosebar, Jeffrey Muse, Cedric Sanders and Carisa Simpson, all of Pasco; Clint Buchanan, Zona Gale, David Olsen and Robert Lugenbeal, all of Richland; Kim Gregory and Traci Hoss, both of Spokane; and Marcus Maiuri, Walla Walla.

Timothy Heeter, son of Gary and Susan Heeter, Spokane, has been awarded a $7,000 annual Presidential Scholarship at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa. He graduated from Mead High School.
