Baby Believed Dead Shows Improvement

From Staff And Wire Reports

A newborn baby mistaken for dead after being found in a toilet bowl has improved to satisfactory condition at Children’s Hospital.

The girl probably will be moved out of intensive care today, hospital spokesman Dean Forbes said Friday.

The 16-year-old mother has been visiting her child, Forbes said.

The baby was born early Tuesday in the bathroom of the teen mother’s suburban Burien home.

As the ambulance was arriving at Highline Community Hospital, the ambulance crew noticed movement in the bag.

The baby was immediately treated in the emergency room, then transported to Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

Officials with Child Protective Services won’t allow the baby to return to her mother’s home until investigators determine that it’s a safe place for her, said Gordon Schultz, a spokesman for the state Department of Social and Health Services.Schultz said the agency is awaiting the results of a King County police investigation before making any decisions.

County police spokesman Jerrell Wills said investigators have so far turned up nothing that would cause police to recommend against giving the mother custody.
