Inmate Rescued From Attempted Hanging

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Kootenai County Jail inmate tried to hang himself Friday morning, but was rescued by a fellow inmate and several sheriff’s deputies.

Kevin B. Stevenson, 27, used a torn sheet to hang himself from a safety screen that covered a fire detector in his cell, said Lt. Jeraldine Riggs.

An inmate who was sharing the cell with Stevenson walked into the cell, found his roommate and called jail deputies at about 11:10 a.m.

Stevenson was unconscious but breathing when the deputies and the jail nurse arrived, Riggs said.

Stevenson was treated at Kootenai Medical Center, then returned to the jail.

He is now held in an observation cell, Riggs said. He is in jail on an aggravated assault charge.

This is the second time this year an inmate has attempted suicide by hanging.

Paula M. Alban tried to hang herself with a sheet in February.
