Knife For Cookies, Says Suspended Boy

A kindergartener who brought a table knife to school was suspended for 10 days under a zero-tolerance policy banning weapons.

While Pawtucket school Superintendent Emile Chevrette defended the rule, state Child Advocate Laureen D’Ambra called the 6-year-old’s suspension “an overreaction.”

D’Ambra said the boy told her he brought the knife to school to cut cookies. She asked state education officials to reinstate him and a hearing was scheduled for Monday.

The student was suspended Tuesday from Agnes Little Elementary School after the knife fell to the floor in class. Chevrette defended the principal’s punishment.
