Reception, Art Show Honors Award Winners

The Allied Arts Center in Richland will host a reception today for the winners of its annual scholarship award. The reception, 1 to 3 p.m., is open to the public.

Winners are Xay Ungphachank, Hanford High School; Nola Deane Schifferl and Mackenzie Jane Boetes, both of Columbia Basin College; and graduate student Keith Urdana, University of Washington.

Their paintings and drawings in various media, plus Urdana’s sculpture, will be displayed TuesdaySaturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., until July 1.

Acting workshops

Starting Monday, Washington State University will hold youth acting workshops as part of its Summer Palace Theatre activities in Pullman.

Classes, for students in grades one through nine, are designed to help young people hone their thespian talents, and will conclude with an original performance.

Students work in small groups practicing acting exercises and improvisational techniques.

The first session runs Monday through Friday, and happens again June 19-23. The second session runs July 10-14 and July 17-21. Workshops meet from 10-11:30 a.m. Tuition is $35.

Eastern Washington University is sponsoring its Theatre School for Youth, June 19-30 at the Cheney campus.

Students ages 8-17 can study acting, dancing, musical comedy and the technical aspects of theater. Classes will be held Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.5 p.m.

Instructors include Robert and Carmen Farley of Spokane Children’s Theatre; and Patrick Treadway, a well-known Spokane actor and puppeteer.

At the end of the two-week course, students will stage two performances showcasing what they’ve learned.

Idaho watercolorists’ work displayed

“Ten Koi II,” a watercolor by Coeur d’Alene artist Mary Maxam, is on display at the Northwest Watercolor Society’s 55th-annual exhibition at the Howard Mandville Gallery in Kirkland.

The show remains open until June 17.

As a result of her acceptance into the exhibit, Maxam is now a signature member of the watercolor society.

Another of her works, “Art I Aftermath No. 5,” has been accepted in the 22nd-annual Rocky Mountain National show at the Foothills Arts Center in Golden, Colo., opening July 29.

Chorus auditions

The Spokane Area Children’s Chorus will hold auditions for children 7 to 17 Monday and Wednesday at Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington. Song preparation isn’t required.

Theater auditions

Lake City Playhouse in Coeur d’Alene will hold auditions for “Annie” at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the theater, 14th and Garden.

Auditioners should prepare one song 1-1/2 minutes long; an accompanist will be provided. All roles are available for both children and adults.

Artists, landscapers needed

The Spokane Arts Commission and the city of Spokane Wastewater Management Department is inviting artists and landscape architects to apply for the Sewer Maintenance Art Project.

Applicants must reside in Eastern Washington or North Idaho. A budget of $4,100 is available for the project.

Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on July 5. A pre-proposal workshop will be at 4 p.m., June 15, at the Sewer Maintenance Facility at 909 E. Sprague.

Symphony season broadcast

Concerts from the Washington Idaho Symphony’s 1994-95 season will be aired on Northwest Public Television, Channel 10 in the Moscow/Pullman area. The Symphony Chorale and the 1995 Young Artists will also be featured.

Highlighted performances will include works by Mahler, Mozart, Strauss, Rachmaninoff, Bach and Vaughan Williams.

Broadcasts will be at 9 tonight and June 18 and 25.

Arts festival in Methow Valley.

The Methow Arts Alliance is accepting applications from artists and crafters for the Methow Arts Festival, July 8 and 9 in Twisp Park in the Methow Valley.

Entries will be screened for quality, originality and balance of media. Preference will be given to local and regional artists.

This year’s event - “Art in the Out-of-Doors” - is a carnival-style festival to provide education and fun.

Poetry contest

To celebrate World Poetry Day in October, The Spokane Branch of The National League of Pen Women is sponsoring the Amy Woodward Fisher Poetry Contest.

Entry deadline is Aug. 15. The contest is open to anyone over age 18.

A show of 1,500 art pieces

More than 30 noted artists from a dozen states will display their work at NorthTown through June 18 in an exhibit sponsored by Holly Merrifield’s World of Fine Art.

Art work varies from glass sculpture to hand-crafted musical instruments.
