Rise In Snow Melt Could Cause Floods

From Staff And Wire Reports

The threat of possible major flooding has shifted from the sky to mountain slopes, where a large increase in snow melt could create major problems, the state Disaster and Emergency Services Division warned Saturday.

An official noted the recent storms added heavy snow to an already unusually high snowpack in some areas.

“With the ground saturated from recent rains and the streams, rivers and dams full, the rapid runoff from the snow pack could result in major flooding,” said Larry Akers, an information officer.

He said residents in flood-prone areas, and especially people taking advantage of improving weather for outdoor activities, should try and stay abreast of changing weather information.

Campers should avoid low-lying areas, drivers should never cross flooded roads and people taking trips should let others know their planned destinations because conditions can change rapidly.
