WSU Woman Golfer Selected As Academic All-American

From Staff Reports

Margaret Switzer, a Washington State University sophomore from Newport, Wash., has been named to the American Golf Coaches Association Academic AllAmerican golf team.

Switzer, who has a double major in international business and marketing, earned a 3.54 grade-point average during the 1994-95 academic year. As a walk-on this season, she became the No. 3 golfer on the WSU women’s team.

Basketball

Sabrina Sanowski of Deary, Idaho, has signed a letter of intent to play at Whitworth College. Sanowski, a 5-foot8 wing, averaged 18 points per game for the Mustangs.

Elementary students in grades 4-6 can participate in a free coed camp July 10-14 or July 17-19 and 21 at North Central High School. Hours are 1-3 p.m.

For further information, call 353-3397.

Baseball

Mike Kinkade, a senior catcher and first baseman at WSU, was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association’s Smith Super Team.

Kinkade, who hit .343 this past season, was named to the All-America second team for the second straight year.

All-star teams from Spokane, Wenatchee, Pasco, Kennewick and Lewiston will compete in a 14-year-old Junior Olympic national tournament qualifier Friday through Sunday at Central Valley High School.

Admission is $15 for individuals and $25 for families for the weekend. For more information, contact Drew Brooks at 994-8080.

Soccer

Seven high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to play for the WSU women’s soccer team.

“Every one of these kids will impact in some way and be responsible for next year’s success,” said coach Lisa Gozley, who led the Cougars to their first NCAA Tournament berth past season.

A key addition to the Cougars’ defense is Lynsey Coffey (Santa Rosa, Calif.), who will likely have the task of replacing All West Coast selection Robyn Smith at sweeper. In 1994, Coffey was a North Bay League firstteam selection as a defender at Ursuline High. She was the North Bay Player of the Year in 1993 and led the league in scoring in 1992 and 1993 while playing forward.

WSU’s center midfield position will be anchored by Amy Chippendale (Kearny, N.J.), a four-time New Jersey All-State selection. Another Jersey product is Kim Schelpf (Ocean, N.J.), a forward from Ocean Township High. According to Gozley, Schelpf is as fast, if not faster, than current Cougars defender and Jersey native Suzanne Fulcher (Freehold, N.J.), considered WSU’s quickest player last season.

Goalkeeper Jessica Glazer (Bloomfield, Mich.) is an important piece to WSU’s defensive puzzle next fall with the departure of starter Kris Young.

Forward Randi Glas (Grand Forks, N.D.) was named Miss Soccer in North Dakota after she led her Red River High squad to the state title. Two other midfield prospects are Lynette Dickerson (Sandy, Utah) and Jennifer Brosseau (Carrolton, Texas).
