Bottom Lines Columnist Jim Kershner’s Take On The News

The jurors are becoming nauseated

A juror in the O.J. trial had to leave the courtroom suddenly on Thursday, sickened at being forced to look at graphic images of lawyers for months at a time.

Even the name sounds like something from Clancy

Spokane’s own Capt. Scott O’Grady was rescued in a dramatic joint effort by the Navy, the Marines and Tom Clancy, who was brought in to help with the plotting.

He should get one retroactively

O’Grady attended the USAF Survival School at Fairchild in 1991. Let’s hope they gave him an A.

Checkbook diplomacy

I see that Argentina still wants the Falklands, and is willing to pay each British family $800,000 to clear out. If only Argentina had thought of this in the first place, both sides would have saved lives and money, what with the cost of aircraft carriers these days.

It’s a civilized idea

Veto No. 1 in an upcoming series

President Clinton issued his first veto last week, the first of 800 vetoes he has planned over the next 18 months.

Their love-hate relationship with Newt

Newt is in New Hampshire, pretending not to run for president. Democrats have mixed feelings about a possible Newt candidacy. On one hand, he’s a strong leader with lots of charisma. On the other hand, he’d be so easy to beat.

Who would have guessed?

South Africa has abolished the death penalty, which makes me angry. Now even South Africa is more merciful than America.
