Janzen’s Fast Finish Carries Him To Playoff, Kemper Open Golf Win

Lee Janzen had the only bogey-free round of the afternoon, then made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Sunday to beat Corey Pavin and win the Kemper Open golf tournament in Potomac, Md.

Janzen, who started the day three shots back, won with a 4-under-par 67. The 12-under 272 total gave him his second victory of the year and sixth of his career.

Pavin bogeyed the playoff hole, a typical occurrence in a final round peppered with bogeys and double-bogeys.

Janzen advanced to the playoff with a birdie on No. 18, his fourth birdie in four tries on the hole this week. He made 5-for5 in the playoff after hitting his approach within 12 feet of the pin.

Julie Larsen won for the first time on the LPGA Tour, capturing the First BankEdina Realty LPGA Classic in Brooklyn Park, Minn. by sinking a birdie putt on the 17th hole and holding off Leigh Ann Mills.

Larsen, who shared the first-round lead and was alone in first after the second round of the 54-hole tournament, fired a final-round 71 to finish at 11-under-par 205 and win $75,000 at Edinburgh USA Golf Course.

Jim Dent won the BellSouth Senior Classic in Nashville, Tenn. by two strokes. He fired a 4-under-par 68 in the closing round and finished with a 203 total to score his first victory of the year.

Dent went into the final round with a one-stroke edge over Bob Murphy, who closed with a 69 to wind up at 205.

Dent got through the final round with one bogey, while his playing partner Murphy, bogeyed No. 2 and then went over par again on the 12th hole.

Bernhard Langer won the European Tournament Players Championship in Hamburg, Germany, firing a 69 in the final round and finishing with an 18-underpar 270.

Langer, the leading money winner on the European tour this year, captured the 34th title of his career and took home $179,000 in first-prize money.
