Waltz Wins Discus At Golden West Meet

Post Falls High’s Ian Waltz captured first place in the discus on Saturday night at the prestigious Golden West track and field meet in Sacramento, Calif.

Waltz fired the discus 201-9, outdistancing his nearest rival by about six feet. Waltz was fifth in the shot put at 60-2.

Waltz had only one day of practice prior to Saturday’s meet.

The Golden West extends invitations to athletes who had the top marks nationally during the high school season. Waltz qualified based on his Idaho State A-1 record discus throw of 203-9 and his shot put of 63-0 at regionals. Next up for Waltz: Relaxation. The Washington-State bound Waltz left for Hawaii on Sunday for a graduation present.

Thompson takes first

North Idaho College sophomore Chris Thompson claimed first place in the discus on Saturday at the U.S. Track Coaches Association All-Star American Community College meet at Edwardsville, Ill.

Thompson, a Sandpoint High graduate, fired 156-9, winning by just 2 inches. Athletes had to pay their own expenses to the meet and only three competed in the discus.
