Harry Starner Spokane

Graveside memorial service for Harry B. Starner, 60, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Starner died Thursday.

He was born on the family farm near Edgemont, S.D.

He had lived at Lakeland Village, Latah Manor, and most recently in the Howard Group Home.

Mr. Starner worked for Career Connections in Spokane.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident and had participated in the Special Olympics for six years.

He is survived by one sister, Edith Collins of Tum Tum, Wash.; and one brother, A.E. Starner of Clackamas, Ore.

Melvin ‘Junior’ George Jr. Moscow, Idaho

Memorial service for Melvin Lloyd “Junior” George Jr., 20, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Heyburn State Park on Chatcolet Lake near Plummer, Idaho. Kramer Funeral Home of Tekoa, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. George died Friday in a motorcycle accident on the St. Joe River Road near St. Maries.

He was born in Moscow and graduated from Plummer High School in 1993.

He played football in high school and was selected to play in the Idaho AllStar football game during his senior year.

He was a member of the Army Reserve, 659th Engineering Company, in Spokane.

Mr. George had worked at Rayonier Lumber Co. in Plummer for the past 10 months.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Sheryl and Jack Bringman of Plummer; his father, Melvin George Sr., of Priest River, Idaho; two brothers, Dock White of Deary, Idaho, and Dennis White Jr. of Lewiston; his grandparents, Jack and Doris Purdy of St. Maries, and Dock and Mitzie Browning of Deary; and his companion, Gidget Nesdahl of Plummer.

Esther Johnson Otis Orchards

Service for Esther M. Johnson, 85, is set for 11 a.m. today at Mueller’s TriCities Funeral Home in Kennewick. Burial will be at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Clovis, N.M., died Friday.

She was a bank teller for SeaFirst Bank for 16 years and retired in 1971.

She had lived in Spokane for 24 years and was a former Richland resident.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Greenacres Baptist Church.

Her husband, William Johnson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Wertz of Everett, Jacqualine Kojac of Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., and Janet Thatcher of Sumner, Wash.; one brother, Glenn Jackson of Amarillo, Texas; 17 grandchildren and 38 greatgrandchildren.

Grace ‘Dora’ Piper Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Grace Theodora “Dora” Piper, 81, was Monday at United Church of Christ in Newport. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home of Newport was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Piper, a former longtime Spokane resident, died Friday.

She was born on a homestead west of Blanchard, Idaho.

She graduated from high school in Newport in 1933.

Mrs. Piper was a bookkeeper for many years before she moved to Spokane, where she lived for 42 years.

In 1990 she returned to Newport.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William; two daughters, Fern Gross of Vancouver, Wash., and Yvonne Leigh Sutton Piper of Olalla, Wash.; and one sister, May Hefling of Spokane.

Albert Rasmussen Athol, Idaho

Graveside services for Albert H. Rasmussen are set for 3 p.m. today at Mountain View Cemetery at Athol. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rasmussen, 65, died Tuesday.

He was born in Waitsburg, Wash., and attended schools in Dixie, Idaho, and Walla Walla.

Mr. Rasmussen served in the Army during the Korean War.

He worked at Coos Head Timber in Coos Bay, Ore., for 20 years and then moved to Athol.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Marian; two sons, Ron Rasmussen of Dexter, Ore., and Mike Rasmussen of Athol; one brother, Elmer Rasmussen of Asotin, Wash.; four sisters, Ellen Churchill of Palouse, Wash., Christina Rasmussen of Veradale, Martha Jordan of Raymond, Wash., and Viola Savage of Kennewick; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Fonda Fulton Coeur d’Alene

Service for Fonda Ferris Fulton, 84, was Monday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Fulton died Wednesday at home.

She was born in Imogene, Iowa.

She lived in Spokane for more than 50 years before moving to Coeur d’Alene six months ago.

Her husbands, Kenneth Ferris and Jim Fulton, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Gary Ferris of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one sister, Virginia Plummer of Nokesville, Va.; four grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.

Theodore Newhouse Spokane

Memorial service for Theodore A. Newhouse, 75, was Saturday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

Born in Salt Lake City, Mr. Newhouse died Thursday.

He worked for 20 years in Wallace as a miner. In Spokane he worked in construction before retiring in 1985.

A 39-year Spokane resident, he was a member of the Elks Lodge, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and the Inland Empire Laborers Union.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Evva Newhouse; one son, Robert Isner, and one daughter, Lavirta Hutyler, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Clayton Sims Spokane

Cremation is planned for L. Clayton Sims, 86. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sims, who died Tuesday, was born in Ava, Ark.

Mr. Sims was the owner of Ace Printing Co. from 1950 to 1975. He was a member of the Central Lions Club.

His wife, Louise Sims, died in 1989.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald Sims of Spokane, Robert Sims of Bothell, Wash., and Charles Sims of Bellevue, Wash.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lila Caldwell Spokane

No service will be held for Lila J. Caldwell, 79, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Caldwell, who died Sunday, was born in Ashtabula, Ohio.

She had lived in Greenacres for 38 years and in Otis Orchards for 10 years.

For the past 11 years she had wintered in Mesa, Ariz.

She had worked as an X-ray technician in Spokane dental and medical offices.

Mrs. Caldwell was a member of Opportunity Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William Caldwell; one daughter, Rebecca Caldwell of Boulder, Colo.; and one son, David Caldwell of Liberty Lake.

Agnes Nyborg Spokane

Memorial service for Agnes C. Nyborg, 91, was Monday at Central Lutheran Church. Private burial was at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Nyborg, who was born in Denmark, died Wednesday. She was a homemaker.

A 54-year resident of Spokane, she was a member of Central Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by two daughters, Lavonne Gehret and Carol Moore, both of Spokane; one son, Jim Nyborg of Veradale; 17 grandchildren, 27 greatgrandchildren, 11 great-greatgrandchildren, four great-great-greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgreat-great-grandchild.

Lola Nichols Kingston, Idaho

Private family service will be held Wednesday for Lola Nichols, 95, at the Shoshone Funeral Chapel in Kellogg.

Mrs. Nichols died Sunday.

She was born in Minnesota and moved to Kingston in 1994. She had owned her own beauty salon in California for many years.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph, at home; three stepdaughters, Barbara Mathews of Kingston, Marion Patterson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Ruth Thortenson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister, Viola Holliday of Cornelius, Ore.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sadie Eastridge Spokane

Graveside service for Sadie E. Eastridge, 81, is planned for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eastridge, who was born in Deer Park, died Sunday at home.

Her husband, Walter Eastridge, preceded her in death.

A longtime area resident, she volunteered with Hutton Settlement, Cancer Patient Care and the Veterans Affairs Hospital.

She is survived by one son, Doug Fisher of Spangle; two brothers, Carl Lewis of Deer Park and Don Lewis of Spokane; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Stowers Spokane

Private grave dedication for Evelyn Stowers, 83, will be held. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stowers, who died Thursday, was born in Blackfoot, Idaho.

A 48-year resident of Spokane, Mrs. Stowers was a member of the Spokane 2nd Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She served two full-time missions for the church and was involved in constructing the church building on the corner of Indiana and Post.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin Stowers; three daughters, Sandra Kimbrough, Judy Emerson and Mikel Reuter; one son, Dennis Stowers; numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Stella Curry Spokane

Service for Stella A. Curry, 88, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Pines Mausoleum. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Curry, who died Friday at home, was born in Nebraska.

She came to Spokane in 1942 and had lived in the Valley since 1954.

She worked as a nurse’s aide and was active at the Valley Senior Center. She was also involved with the American Association of Retired Persons.

Her husband, Wilbur Curry, died in 1986.

She is survived by one daughter, Blanche Psaradakis of Devils Lake, N.D.; one son, Gordon Curry of Spangle; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Albert Veltri Mead

Funeral Mass service for Albert R. Veltri, 74, was Monday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Veltri, who died Thursday, was born in Priest River, Idaho.

He worked for a railroad and had lived in the Spokane area for 54 years.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Virginia Veltri; one daughter, Diane Hickey; one stepson, Danny Lavigne; one stepdaughter, Sharon Mace; one brother, Ervin Veltri of Spokane; and one grandchild.

John Bowers Valley, Wash.

Service for John H. “Jack” Bowers, 67, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash.

Mr. Bowers, who died Thursday, was born in Liberty, Ore.

He was a 37-year resident of Valley.

He and his wife, Alice, farmed, logged and cut firewood.

He is survived by his wife; one brother, Raymond Bowers of Galescreek, Ore.; one half-brother, Eugene Wicki of Portland; one sister, Marjorie Stubbs of Cascade Locks, Ore.; one half-sister, Loretta May of Anaconda, Mont.; one stepson, Jon McGlothen of Newport, Wash.; three stepdaughters, Shirley Eberhardt of Buxton, Ore., Doreen Kyser of Birkinfeld, Ore., and Jacklin Tenny of Valley; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
