Openings Remain For Spd Summer Youth Programs

Openings are still available in this summer’s COPY Kids program sponsored by the Spokane Police Department.

Community Opportunity Programs for Youth consists of nine week-long sessions, based out of three community centers and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.

The program begins Monday, June 19, at the East Central Community Center. Each week, 40 youths will ride a D.A.R.E. bus to meet with police department officials about a neighborhood improvement project.

Then they’ll go to a city park, where they’ll eat a bag lunch provided by the department. During the meal, they’ll talk with adults and peer role models about goals, self esteem or other concerns. Some will play sports.

After lunch, they’ll take the D.A.R.E. bus to a local business, where they’ll tour the building and discuss how their own education is important to their future employment. They will visit Boeing, area hospitals and Fairchild Air Force Base.

There is no charge for the program, which is aimed to help at-risk members of the city’s youth community.

Youths between the ages of 11 and 15 are encouraged to apply by calling 625-4087.
