Simms native Molly Swanson of Vernon Regional Junior College in Texas is putting in a good showing at the College National Finals Rodeo at Montana State University.

The freshman cowgirl won the first round of barrel racing on Monday and took the second go-round lead on Tuesday night by turning the cloverleaf course in 14.57 seconds.

Swanson, who had a winning time of 14.41 seconds in the first go-round, leads the average with a two-run combined time of 28.98 seconds.

The top 10 in the average in all nine events at the College Finals compete in Sunday’s championship round to determine national championships.

Swanson was one of three second go-round leaders to emerge during Tuesday night’s performance.

James Hagan of Louisiana’s Northwestern State, took the second-round lead in steer wrestling with a 4.7 seconds run. He also assumed the lead in the average of the event with a combined time of 10.1 seconds.

In team roping, Shawn Willis of Wyoming and Brett Fleming of Eastern Wyoming had a combined time of 7.3 seconds to take the second go-round lead. They moved to fifth place in the average.

Taking early leads in rough stock riding events were Zane Davis of Nevada-Las Vegas in bull riding with an 81, Johnny Pollock of Southwest Texas Junior College in saddle bronc riding with a 74, and James Boudreaux of McNeese State of Louisiana in bareback riding with a 78.
