Neumann Not Plagued At Locust As She Grabs Early Tournament Lead

Liselotte Neumann opened with a 5-under-par 67 Thursday to take a onestroke lead in the LPGA Rochester International at Rochester, N.Y.

JoAnne Carner, a Hall of Famer who has not won since 1985, finished with a couple of birdies to join Nanci Bowen and Michele Redman in a threeway tie at 68 at Locust Hill Country Club.

Neumann, 29, won the British Open, the Minnesota Classic and the LPGA Heartland Classic in St. Louis in 1994 after a three-year winless streak.

Defending champion Lisa Kiggens crashed to an opening 77. Nancy Lopez shot even par, one ahead of Patty Sheehan. Both Lopez and Sheehan are three-time winners at this event.

English golfers Malcolm Mackenzie, David Ray and defending champion Paul Curry shot 8-under-par 64s to tie for the first-round lead at the Jersey Open at La Moye, N.J.
