Syracuse Gives Up Crown

Compiled From Wire Services

Syracuse announced that it must surrender its 1990 national championship in men’s lacrosse because of a car loan that made a star player ineligible.

An NCAA infractions committee decided that Nancy Simmons, the wife of coach Roy Simmons Jr., violated NCAA rules when she cosigned a car loan for All-America player Paul Gait and his wife, Cathleen.

As a coach’s wife, Mrs. Simmons was classified as a representative of the university.
