Mother Convicted In Burial Death Of Daughter

Compiled From Wire Services

A mother who said she stood by while her husband buried her newborn daughter alive in their back yard was convicted of second-degree murder and faces up to life in prison.

A jury rejected Urbelina Emiliano’s defense that she was a battered wife.

Emiliano, 24, was convicted Friday. She said her husband, Fortino Perez, considered the child an embarrassment because the infant was fathered by another man.

Perez, 29, also was convicted of second-degree murder and was sentenced in December to a prison term of 25 years to life.
