Students Expelled For Carrying Knives

From Staff And Wire Reports

Five Burley Junior High School students, including a 13-year-old accused of stabbing a classmate for not returning a pack of cigarettes, have been expelled for a year for carrying knives on campus.

“All students were expelled for violation of our zero-tolerance weapons policy,” Jerry Doggett, the Cassia County School District’s assistant superintendent, said Thursday.

Three of the students were expelled because of their involvement in the stabbing of Jared Timmons, 15, and later concealment of the four-inch knife used in the stabbing.

After stabbing Timmons in the chest with the knife, police say the eighth-grade suspect fled, dropping the knife on school grounds. A girl picked up the knife and passed it along to another girl at school after being confronted by police and school officials. The stabbing occurred two days before school recessed.

A schoolwide crackdown followed the stabbing, and police found another student carrying a knife on campus.

A fifth student expelled on Thursday was found with a knife at the junior high before the stabbing, Doggett said.
