Whitworth College Has Pianos For A Song

Whitworth College Music Department is selling its pianos today to the public in order to buy new ones for the fall.

These aren’t old, beat-up, out-of-tune pianos. Instead, each is only a year old and were loaned to the school by Davis and Hosch Music and Squires Music Center.

Price of the pianos has been greatly discounted; many still carry warranties.

Piano makes include Steinway, Kawai, Boston, Wurlitzer and others. Financing and delivery are available.

Dancing workshop

The Academy of Dance, 14214 E. Sprague, begins its month-long Summer Dance Workshop on Monday, June 26.

The curriculum covers performance classes and seminars in ballet, lyrical jazz, musical theater, clogging, mime and African dance at both intermediate and advanced levels.

Pre-ballet and adult ballet are also part of the workshop and a ballet and folk dance class is offered to beginners.

Faculty includes academy staff members and guest instructors.

Participants can enroll from one to four weeks.

Throw a pot

YWCA’s pottery program begins its summer session Monday.

Classes include beginning and advanced adult pottery and “Expressions in Clay,” along with two children’s courses: “Creative Connection” and “Children’s Hand Building.”

A four-hour workshop, “A Raku Kiln from a Converted Electric Kiln,” is scheduled 5-9 p.m., Thursday.

Poet of the Year?

Darin Eilerman of Spokane has been chosen by the International Society of Poets as a semi-finalist for Poet of the Year.

Three of his poems, to be published in anthology books, garnered Eilerman the nomination.

The winner will be notified in August.

Eilerman is currently working on a coffee-table book of his writings and photography.

Cherry Creek welcomes Spokane artist

Denver’s Cherry Creek Arts Festival, one of the country’s foremost outdoor juried art festivals, has selected Spokane watercolor artist Mari Anne Figgins to exhibit her work there this summer.

Figgins was one of 200 artists chosen from a field of 2,298 applicants.

The festival draws some 300,000 spectators in its three-day run, July 1-3.

And, on the international level …

Spokane artist Marian Flahavin has had a painting, “Dinner at Eight,” selected by the International Association of Pastel Societies to be shown at its International Art Exhibition in Denver in July.

Another of her works is now on display at the Northwest Pastel Society’s Juried Show at the Seattle Convention Center.

Colville artist wins award

Dr. Jerry McKellar, a retired Colville dentist, recently won the “Best of Show/Bronze” award at the National Western Art Show and Auction in Ellensburg for his piece, “Black Raven.”

It is the second time in two years that McKellar has received this award.
