Chinese Upset By Czech-Taiwan Talks

Compiled From Wire Services

Republic China, piqued once again by another nation’s dealings with Taiwan, criticized Czech Premier Vaclav Klaus on Monday for holding talks with visiting Taiwanese Premier Lien Chan.

“We are very surprised and unhappy,” said Huang Tong Po, spokesman at the Chinese Embassy in Prague. Chinese Ambassador Yen Peng issued a verbal protest to the Czech Foreign Ministry.

China recalled its ambassador in Washington last week after Taiwanese President Lee Teng-Hui visited Ithaca, N.Y., to attend his Cornell University college reunion.
