Two Chiefs Get Junior Tryouts

Two Spokane Chiefs have been invited to the Canadian national junior hockey team’s evaluation camp, the first step toward the World Junior Championships.

Chiefs defenseman Sean Gillam and forward Jason Podollan are among 42 players expected for the camp Aug. 12-18 in Montreal.

Gillam, the drafted property of the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings, lives in Lethrbidge, Alberta. Podollan, taken by the Florida Panthers, is from Vernon, British Columbia. Both are 19.

They’ll join eight players from Canada’s undefeated world junior team of a year ago - goalkeeper Dan Cloutier, defensemen Chad Allen, Nolan Baumgartner, Ed Jovanovski and Wade Redden, and forwards Jason Botterill, Jeff O’Neill and Ryan Smyth.

National team coach is Marcel Comeau of the Western Hockey League Kelowna Rockets.

“This is an excellent opportunity for players to show us they can adapt to the international game,” Comeau said.

Canada’s opening game in the world tournament in Worcester, Mass., is Dec. 26 against the United States.

Adrian Olson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth inning, helping Hillyard Boosters hold off Washington Trust Bank 5-4 in an American Legion game at Rogers on Tuesday.

Olson, who scattered five hits, struck out five and allowed three earned runs, got Matt Comfort to ground out to end the game. Darkness ended the game in the sixth inning.

Hillyard trailed 3-2 in the fourth inning before Bob Kuch and Jeremy Bailey hit back-to-back sacrifice flies for a 4-3 lead.

In the fifth, Hillyard opened a 5-3 advantage when Olson grounded out to score Joe Bailey from third base.

At Gonzaga University, Nick Spunich pitched a six-hit shutout and led Olympic Sports to a 10-0 victory over Key Bank.

Spunich struck out 12 and walked none in the six-inning game.

Brad Nollmeyer supplied the offense with a two-run home run in the sixth inning and finished with three RBIs.

Olympic put the game away by totaling five runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
