Cda Falls For Ace’s Act In 3-0 Defeat

All Chad Anderson needs is a Hollywood agent.

He’s got the radiant smile and the Charlie Sheen haircut from the movie “Major League” - with the blazing fastball to boot.

Anderson was everything - except a Wild Thing, as Sheen’s character was nicknamed - as he pitched the Glacier Twins from Whitefish, Mont., past Coeur d’Alene 3-0 on Thursday night in the Cranston Memorial Tournament at McEuen Field.

Elsewhere, Lavern (Calif.) tripped up Kennewick 6-3. The four-day tournament continues today with Kennewick facing Bozeman (Mont.) at 10 a.m., Salem (Ore.) and Glacier battling at 1 p.m., Trail (B.C.) and Lavern scrapping at 4 and CdA meeting Woodinville (Wash.) at 7.

“I like him (Sheen), I liked the movie,” said Anderson, after his four-hit, one-walk, six-strikeout effort.

Reminiscent of a scene in “Major League,” several teammates jokingly instructed Anderson on which cliches to use when talking to the media just before he was interviewed. You know, the standard, “It was a team effort,” or “We were really focused.”

But Anderson, a free spirit who sports a shark’s tooth necklace, ventured on his own with colorful responses. “Tomorrow we might go wave running or paint ball or something,” he said. “Have some fun.”

“He’s a character,” said Glacier coach Ross Darner, whose club is 16-12. “He’s also an unbelievable football and basketball player. He’s also our center fielder and leading the team in hitting.”

For the most part, Anderson was matched pitch for pitch by CdA’s Jesse Hoorelbeke, who tossed a seven-hitter.

The Twins scored the only run they’d need in the third, though Hoorelbeke should have escaped unharmed. Sean Kelso - the barber who sculpted Anderson’s Christmas-tree hairdo - singled, but was caught leaning on Hoorelbeke’s pick-off attempt. However, Kelso beat first baseman Nick Groth’s throw to second. Kelso eventually scored when CdA didn’t execute against a double steal.

Back-to-back doubles to right by Brian Sparr and Sean Gilchrist added a run in the sixth and another run scored on Nathan Johnson’s RBI single in the seventh.

“Jesse threw 90 pitches in a complete game,” CdA coach Paul Mather said. “He threw 86 in a complete-game loss his last time out. He’s the tough-luck pitcher of the summer.”

Offensively, the Lumbermen (5-9) had two tantalizing opportunities. With no outs and runners on first and second in the fourth, two straight CdA batters failed to get sacrifice bunts down and struck out.

“We weren’t exactly knocking it around,” Mather said. “We were trying to generate something.”

In the sixth, again with runners on first and second and no outs, Mather shunned the bunt with power-hitting Hoorelbeke at the plate. But he flied to center and the Lumbermen went down quietly thereafter.

Mather’s troops are ailing. Catcher Luke Anderson is out with a broken finger, and pitcher Jeff Anstine (shoulder) and Mark Scates (pulled biceps tendon) are hurting.

Jordan Nilsen singled home the goahead run in the top of the ninth as Bellevue (Wash.) defeated the Prairie Falcons 2-1 at the Scott Klaudt tourney in Missoula.
