Indians’ Short Win Streak Ends

Two streaks ended Thursday when Mike Mahoney’s two-run homer in the second inning led Eugene to a 3-1 win over the Spokane Indians.

The Emeralds (2-6) halted a fivegame losing streak. Spokane (2-6), which started the season 0-5, had its two-game winning streak wiped out.The game was the first meeting between the teams since the Kansas City Royals left Eugene and signed a four-year player development contract with Spokane.

The five-game Northwest League series continues tonight. Spokane’s Justin Adam (0-1) pitches against the Emeralds’ P.K. Koehler (0-1).

Mahoney, 0 for 6 coming in, connected off Indians starter Daniel Soto (0-2) for a 3-0 lead. Mahoney’s blast to right-center scored Todd Tocco, who walked with one out.

Eugene scored in the first when Glenn Williams had a one-out single, stole second and scored on Joe Trippy’s sun-enhanced single.

The Indians reached Eugene starter and winner Charles Cruz (1-0) in the sixth. Brent Schafer had a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Randy Paulin’s grounder to second.

Spokane tried to rally in the ninth off Thad Chrismon, the fourth Eugene pitcher. Chrismon entered after William Roland singled off Keith Mayhew.

Chrismon retired Steve Kortmeyer on a popup before James Vida singled to left. Leon Weathersby, pinch-hitting for Juan Robles, struck out. Mark Melito ended the game with a lineout to first.

Notes: Glenn Dishman, the ace of the 1993 Indians, made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres and absorbed a loss. Dishman allowed seven hits and three earned runs during five innings of a 3-2 loss to the visiting Colorado Rockies. The left-hander was called up on Wednesday from Triple-A Las Vegas.
