Cataldo School Students First In History Contest

Two students from Cataldo Catholic School have been honored as first-place winners in the history contest sponsored by the Washington State Daughters of the American Revolution. They each received a certificate, medal and a check for $50.

Mary Ann Nevers, a fifth-grade student and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nevers, chose as her topic, “My Home in Connecticut.”

Stephanie Stone, a sixth-grade student and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Stone, wrote “A Colonial Girl’s Journal.”

They were sponsored by the Spokane Garry Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort and The Dirt Brothers, a team from Jimmie Heuga’s Ski Express at Schweitzer, took top honors in national fund raising and skiing at the Ski Express National Finals in Vail, Colo.

Schweitzer teams took five winning places in the two categories. The Dirt Brothers team consisted of: Scott Barksdale and Brandon Moon, both of Sandpoint, and Christi Gregorak, Spokane.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort also won top honors for raising the most money - $109,322 - setting a new record.

Two Washington State University publications won gold and bronze medals in the 1995 awards program of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s International Circle of Excellence.

Universe, WSU’s magazine of research and scholarship, won a gold medal, and a bronze medal went to Hilltopics, the university’s newspaper for alumni and friends.

Sen. John Moyer, Spokane, was honored the Sioux Award, the highest honor by the University of North Dakota Alumni Association. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UND in 1945.

Dr. Moyer, a former member of the Washington House of Representatives, was elected to the Washington Senate in 1992. After 37 years, he retired as a Spokane obstetrician and gynecologist, and he now volunteers at a small Hispanic clinic.

The American Society of Women Accountants has chosen its 1995-96 officers: Angela Hughes, president; Joyce Towne, presidentelect; Marlene McCammond, vice president; Christine McDaniel, secretary; and Leslie Miller, treasurer. Linda Carter, Sheri Sapone and Lisa Vaughn were elected as directors.

Shauna Doolittle, daughter of Steve and Jennifer Doolittle, was elected to membership in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She was inducted as an undergraduate student at Seattle University, where she is a junior. She is a 1991 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School.

The following Spokane State Farm Insurance agents have received the company’s Legion of Honor Award for excellence in business: Dave Reighley, Dick Redinger, Greg Mandick, Bill Harrison, Bill Davenny and Gary Burchill. The award is given for writing and maintaining a high quality book of business.
