Jewish Graves In Romania Desecrated

Compiled From Wire Services

Eighty-six Jewish graves were desecrated with sledgehammers and iron clubs in one of the worst attacks on a Jewish cemetery in Romanian history, a Jewish leader said Friday.

“Not even during the war did such a thing happen,” Jewish Federation spokesman Iulian Sorin said of the June 15 attack on Bucharest’s largest Jewish cemetery.

Journalists were not allowed into the cemetery Friday, but an Associated Press photographer saw at least a dozen tombstones overturned and broken.

Since the overthrow of communism in 1989, anti-Semitism has been on the rise in Romania.
