49ers Cut Taylor, For Now

Compiled From Wire Services

The San Francisco 49ers released John Taylor, but continued to negotiate with the veteran wide receiver’s agents.

The release was needed to “proceed with meaningful negotiations,” the team said in a brief statement.

The 49ers will ask for reparations from the Raiders for invading their territory when the NFL owners meet in a special session, probably on July 7, to vote on the Raiders’ return to Oakland.

“What we’ll be looking for is something like what the Rams had to pay to get approval of their move to St. Louis,” said 49ers president Carmen Policy. “We’ll argue that we’ve developed the football interest in this area with our success and now the Raiders will benefit from what we’ve done.”

Erik Williams emerged from the twomonth legal shadow when a grand jury declined to indict the Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle on sexual assault allegations.

The Atlanta Falcons signed former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Browning Nagle to a two-year contract.

The Rams are getting their Anaheim Stadium lockers after all. Mary Kromolowski, who is coordinating the team’s move from Orange County to St. Louis, said the lockers were removed from the stadium and will be transported to Missouri.

The Rams tried to remove the lockers on June 19, but were thwarted in their efforts by stadium officials.

Prince George’s County (Md.) Council put Jack Kent Cooke’s proposal to build a 78,600-seat stadium for his Washington Redskins on a fast track, scheduling a public hearing for July 17.
