Spokane Athletic Supply Knocks Global Off Legion Perch
Spokane Athletic Supply scored runs in every inning of a five-inning 10-2 win over Global Federal Credit Union to take over first place in the South Division of American Legion baseball.
Monte Morgan pitched a two-hitter to beat the previous leaders.
The Central Valley-based team entered this week with a 7-1 record, one-half game ahead of GFCU.
Chasing a North Division title is Spokane Olympic Sports, which entered the week with a 6-1 mark. Olympic is the only team to beat SAS this year.
Spokane Athletic’s win over GFCU was its second last week and the second straight game that Drew Larson had three hits, giving him a team high 12 for the year.
The initial win was Dave Frank’s no-hit shutout over East Valley Merchants. SAS won Tuesday as well.
Olympic Sports’s Steve Sander had a trio of three-hit games during the team’s three wins through Tuesday, giving him 12 for the year.
Nick Spunich pitched a shutout during two victories and Andy Furlott earned the other win.
Job Quest, West Valley’s Legion team, has broken even in eight games, last week handing Global its first loss of the year, 4-3 on the pitching and hitting of Tyson Sohns.
Pony baseball in final week
Teams are entering the final week of Spokane Valley Baseball Pony League competition.
Unbeaten West Valley has secured an American Division championship tie with its three-game lead.
First place in the National Division was decided yesterday when Mountain View II and Perfection Tire met.
A game separated the two teams going into this week.
Perfection’s Ty Blakesley went 7-for-7 with two triples and a home run during two victories last week.
WV hasn’t been tested since two early comefrom-behind decisions over current runnerup Carsten’s Marine.
In three games last week the team beat McDonald’s 11-1, Food Rainbow 18-3 and Olympic Sports 10-0.
Four pitchers allowed a total of two hits during the victories, Tony Wacenske and Derrien Waldron combining on a no-hitter and Adam Griffith pitching a no-hit shutout.
The fourth pitcher, Jerry Jameson, had two hits and three RBIs and Wes Thew three hits and three RBIs against Food Rainbow.
Dave Burnett had four hits, including two doubles and a triple, and Josh Nichols added three hits, including a double and triple during one of Carsten’s Marine’s three wins.
Midget showdown looming
Two American Division unbeatens, Northwest Fence and Medicine Shoppe, are steaming toward a July 13 showdown.
Three other teams are two games behind.
In the National Division unbeatens Resort by the Tracks and Freeman settled their differences on Tuesday.
Waiting in the wings for Resort by the Tracks tonight is once-beaten Valley Firefighters.
Resort whipped previously unbeaten Data Comp of Spokane 15-1 last week for its fifth straight win, Tyler Dykes with a single, triple and home run. Matt Risley went 3-for-3 with a homer and struck out eight. The team also blanked Food Rainbow 2-0 on the 2-hit, 11-strikeout effort of Derric Harty and Risley.
Eric Roethle had five hits in the two games.
Brandon Bowman and Kyle Coordes were each 4-for-4 and Bowman fanned 10 during four innings of onehit pitching as Data Comp beat EDS 21-2.
In the American Division, four Northwest Fence pitchers combined on a 15-strikeout 1-hit 13-0 win over Aztech Electric.
One, Seth Gemar fanned eight in another victory and Kevin Brown was 3-for-3.
Four Medicine Shoppe pitchers, including Greg Malone who hit a 3-run homer, pitched no-hit ball over Tradition House, striking out 17.
Pee Wee American race taut
A game separates four American Division teams with only one headto-head meeting scheduled among them between now and season’s end.
In the National Division, unbeaten Valley OB Gyn had a chance this week to open ground on the rest of the field with two games against challengers.
Tom’s Barber Shop, like Valley OB Gyn, is 7-0 in the American and three others, including future foe Les Schwab, are at 6-1.
Tom’s scored 22-7 and 20-4 wins last week, pitcher Brian Offield remaining unbeaten and joining two others in a 13-strikeout effort during the team’s seventh victory.
Chris Wiberg went 3-for-3 and Gavin Heaton had two doubles.
Spokane Indians kept pace during a 12-0 shutout of Dr. DeCounter DDS, Bobby Williams getting three hits, two of them doubles, and driving in three runs.
Among the four teams with 5-2 records in the National Division, Jems Psomas DDS won twice, including a 16 strikeout no-hitter by KC Little, Willie Horlen and Scotty McFarland over CXT. Horlen also had three hits in win two days earlier.
Pizza Hut got a combined 25 strikeouts during two wins by pitchers Luke Robinson, Tyler Hauschild and Brooks Allen and Allen had three hits and four RBIs during a 12-4 win against George Velis DDS.
Regional volleyball champion
Valley volleyball player Kristi Van Matre is a member of a regional championship team.
Specs Volleyball Club’s 12-under team won its regional age-group tournament.
Another title for Express
Spokane Valley Express F.C. won the U-15 soccer championship at the Spokane Spring Classic to go with the team’s U-16 title.
Coached by Barry Rickards, the team won three of four games for the title, tying the Spokane Breakers 0-0, then winning three one-goal matches.
Wins came over the Spokane Scotties 2-1, Missoula Strikers 3-2 and Nelson, B.C., 1-0. Scoring for the team were Kaelene Parker, Chris Robins, Tiffany Koellen, Danielle Nichols and Amanda Zografos.
Unbeaten in 10 games this year, goalkeeper Becky Bobbit allowed only six scores.
Other team members are Tori Bragdon, Nikki Klepp, Tamsyn Rickards, Michelle Grafos, Natalie Curtis, Anna Carroll, Katie Arnhold, Sarah Laut, and Amber Vinson.
Tournament this weekend
Franklin Park this weekend will be scene of the Fourth of July Shootout, a girls fastpitch softball invitational tournament.
Teams for players aged 18-under and 16-under from throughout the Northwest will participate, including Valley squads.
