Beads And Berries Make Weekend Jaunt Out Of Town Worthwhile

Feel like a treasure hunt this weekend?

If you find charm in the tiniest of craftwork, you won’t want to miss the second InterMountain Bead Bazaar at the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge, 209 Sherman Ave., from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Artists from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana will display their wares - both loose beads and finished jewelry - for sale. You can find the perfect accessory or gift, or learn how to make your own.

Beading, apparently, is a growing interest. The Spokane Bead Society grew from 15 to 45 members in the last year. That group, along with the Coeur d’Alene Bead Society, is hosting the event.

You’ll find everything from precious stone to silver to glass. Artists will be on hand to talk about their work.

The good stuff

Growers at Green Bluff have alerted the masses that strawberries are ripe for the picking. The fruit wasn’t affected much by heavy rains during the early part of June, except to make them big, juicy and sweet. Sounds good.

Siemer’s Pick and Pack, Gibson’s and High Country Orchard, all in Green Bluff, have the largest patches. But strawberry’s don’t last long. This weekend may be your best chance.

Just take the Newport Highway north and take a right on Day-Mount Spokane Road. Signs will point the way.

Jazz up north

The Cutter Theatre once again brings unusual, intriguing entertainment to Metaline Falls. Amber Tide presents a high-spirited mix of acoustic jazz, blues, folk and original music to the Fourth of July weekend.

The duo’s concerts are 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. All shows are $5 at the door or by calling (509) 466-4108.

Amber Tide is Thaddeus and Sandahbeth Spae. The couple spins joyful tall tales of life, love and the open road.

Bring your Visa

For all you people who aren’t sure how to discern quality cashmere from the ordinary kind (hint: it’s usually the price tag), Ballantyne Cashmere is holding a trunk show at The Resort Collection, 210 Sherman Ave., in Coeur d’Alene.

A sales representative will show 50 colors in various styles from which to choose in both women and men’s collections. He’ll discuss his company’s signature - luxury.

A little bit country

You’ve got two chances to don your chaps and cowboy hat this weekend. First, there’s the nationally known ex-veterinarian-turnedcowboy-poet Baxter Black, who will perform in the Grangeville (Idaho) High School gym at 7:30 tonight.

People Magazine called Black “an American original” and The Denver Post referred to him as “Will Roger’s weird grandson.” Universally, he’s known as a funny, common-sense poet. Tickets to his show are $13 for general admission, $15 at the door. Call (208) 983-1916 for more info.

Or, you can check out the Equine Classic Dual Open Horse Show at the Spokane Interstate Fairgrounds on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Don’t feel shy if you don’t have a horse to show, this is a spectator event as well. It’s one of the biggest all-breed shows in the area. Call 235-6705 for more information.

Miscellaneous

The Hillyard Senior Center is holding a Strawberry Social and Dance at 6:30 tonight, featuring the Glenn Allan Trio. Fresh strawberry desserts are $1, beverages are 25 cents and the dance is $2. Can’t beat that.

Kootenai River Days continues this weekend in Bonners Ferry. Here’s a brief breakdown: Old Time Fiddlers Jam Session, 1-4 p.m. Saturday; Roping competition, Saturday and Sunday, all day (call (208) 267-7675 to register); and a raft race on Sunday (call (208) 267-5932 to register).

Each Thursday in July the public is invited to “Hear the Bells” a concert series featuring four of the world’s exceptional carillonneurs playing at St. John’s Cathedral.

Listeners are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to picnic on the cathedral lawn while listening to the music coming from the tower high above the church at 12th Avenue and Grand Boulevard.

Peter Langberg of Denmark will perform next Thursday night at 7. The other three musicians in the series are Beverly Buchanan, Reginald Walker and David Osborn. The hour-long concerts are free to the public.
