Ewu Chooses Two As Teachers Of The Month

Compiled By Mary Beth Bonner

Nancy Woodman-Bump and Mary Uptagrafft, Spokane-area teachers, received Teacher of the Month honors from Eastern Washington University.

Woodman-Bump, who teaches business at East Valley High School, was chosen for December. She is a member of the Washington and National Business Education associations. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from EWU.

Student Debbie Barnes nominated Woodman-Bump, noting she has been a mentor and friend during four years of business classes.

Uptagrafft, who teaches seventh and eighth-grade English and social studies at Chase Middle School, was January’s Teacher of the Month. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from EWU and a Master of Education degree from Whitworth College.

Student Rebecca Gum nominated Uptagrafft, stating she never gives up on a student and that “Mrs. Up” could always cheer her up and worked with her in ways to make last year her best school year ever.

The High School Service Group at St. Augustine’s Parish recently received a Certificate of Commendation from Gov. Mike Lowry for helping foster parents prepare for the holidays.

Some 233 Gonzaga University students recently donated $4,312 in unused meal-plan money from fall semester to three Spokane charities: the Spokane Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and the Children’s Miracle Network.

Mike Bailey, a salesperson at George Gee Pontiac/Kia/GMC, sold the most Pontiacs in 1994 of any salesperson in the Pontiac Division’s San Francisco Zone, encompassing Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii and Northern California. He belongs to the Silver Chapter, a Pontiac salesperson’s association, and his outstanding sales record has earned him appointment as 1995 president of the group.

The top sales associates at Town & Country Realty/Better Homes and Gardens were recognized at their annual year-end awards dinner. They are Joann Pena for Top Sales Agent in 1994 and Gael Rhodes for Top Listing Agent. John Corcoran and Pena received Million Dollar Sales Award plaques, and Donna Karrin was presented with the Rookie of the Year Award.
