Raiders After Foster

Compiled From Wire Services

Far apart in negotiations with leading rusher Harvey Williams, the Los Angeles Raiders are attempting to trade for Pittsburgh Steelers running back Barry Foster, NFL sources said.

The Raiders met with the Steelers at the recent NFL scouting combine and discussed surrendering at least one frontline player and a high draft pick for Foster, who rushed for 851 yards last season despite missing most of six games with injuries.

The Raiders, said a source close to the negotiations, were willing to offer an annual salary of about $1 million to Williams, a bargain in the free-agent market last season at $250,000. Williams wants $2 million a year.

Unrestricted free agent Dave Meggett received an offer from the New England Patriots that is believed to be slightly higher than the one made a day earlier by the New York Giants.

Meggett, who joined the Giants in 1989, reportedly was offered a four-year deal worth an average of $1.8 million from New York on Monday. That offer reportedly included a $2 million signing bonus.

Meanwhile, the Eagles signed Kevin Turner, 25, a 230-pound restricted free agent who has played the last three seasons in New England, to an offer sheet worth nearly $4.13 million over three years.

The New York Jets signed Dexter Carter, the dangerous returner and thirddown back from the San Francisco 49ers, to a three-year contract worth about $1.7 million.
