Pateros, Dayton Boys Muscle Up; Northwest Christian, Gar-Pal Fall

Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Adna, Sprague-Harrington and Toutle Lake withstood the fire. Pateros and Dayton were simply on fire.

The 53rd State B boys basketball tournament opened Wednesday with just one upset - Summit shocked Northwest Christian - but most favorites found the going tough.

Second-ranked Adna needed a hot fourth quarter by 7-foot junior Jeff Ellis to defeat unranked Kittitas 62-53. S-H, tied with Adna in the rankings, overcame unranked Mabton 53-44 with a 9-2 run in the final 90 seconds. Seventh-ranked ACH went to the wire against Tacoma Baptist, finally prevailing 57-55.

And in the most entertaining game of the day, fifth-ranked Toutle Lake topped sixth-ranked Garfield-Palouse 74-62.

Unranked Pateros set a one-game tournament scoring record in a 96-64 win over Neah Bay. Fourth-ranked Dayton used its starters sparingly in a 60-30 win over Naselle.

Also winning openers were Snohomish County Christian 69-58 over Pe Ell; and Summit 73-52 over defending champion Northwest Christian.

Today’s quarterfinals are ACH vs. Adna at noon; Pateros vs. Dayton at 1:30 p.m.; S-H vs. SCC at 6:30; and Toutle Lake vs. Summit at 8.
