Eastern Women Top Grizzlies In Shocker

Lori Napier scored 16 points as Eastern Washington earned its biggest women’s basketball victory in years by beating the Montana Grizzlies in Cheney.

The win qualifies the Eagles for the four-team Big Sky Tournament to be played next week in Missoula, and hosted by the regular-season champion Grizzlies.

EWU and UM meet when the tourney opens next weekend.

Lora Morast led the Grizzlies with 13 points, followed by Greta Koss with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Griz led 39-28 with 17:20 remaining, but EWU tied the game 48-48 on a jump shot by Tina Smith with 8:51 remaining.

The score remained close for the rest of the way.

EWU outrebounded Montana 37-31, led by Smith’s nine rebounds.

Amy Saneholtz scored 16 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as the Cougars won their first road game of the year beating the Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz.

Kristin Erickson came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points and haul in seven rebounds.

Molly Tuter led ASU with 20 points, despite 8-of-23 shooting.

The Sun Devils connected on just 27 of 70 from the field for the game, while Washington State made 25 of 62 field goal attempts.

Rhonda Smith scored 22 points and Kelley Shannon added 15 as the No. 17 Huskies held off the Wildcats in Tuscon, Ariz.

Washington led 33-32 at halftime, but Arizona took the lead at 55-53 with 7:42 to go. The Huskies then scored seven consecutive points after that and never trailed again.

Adia Barnes scored 21 points for the Wildcats and Brenda Pantoja added 14.

Chemeketa 80, CCS 59

The Chemeketa Chiefs used strong interior defense and forced 20 turnovers to beat the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch 80-59 in the first round of the NWAAC women’s basketball tournament in Salem, Ore.

Kelsie Piper led the Chiefs with 19 points. Angie Herr, a 6-foot-2 center, added 18 points on 9-for-10 shooting.

Shelly Johnson led the Sasquatch with 19 points, including two 3-pointers.

CCS was never able to get into its offense without leading scorer and point guard Laura Fralich, out with an injury.

xxxx Whitworth women set for nationals The Whitworth Pirates (18-11) drew 14th-seeded Culver-Stockton, Mo., (29-5) for their first appearance in the NAIA Division II women’s national tournament. The 32-team tourney begins Wednesday, March 8 at Western Oregon College in Monmouth, Ore. Whitworth meets Culver-Stockton at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, March 9.
