Thursday’s Games

Quarterfinals:

Wishkaw Valley 56, St. JohnEndicott 43 Key to the game: Sissel Pierce dominated play at both ends of the court for the Loggerettes, finishing with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks.

Other highlights: The Eagles shot 17 of 58 from the field and 6 of 13 at the line.

St. John-Endicott coach Lorin Carlon said Pierce was only part of the Eagles’ problem.

“She (Pierce) blocked some shots, but we knew she was going to block some,” Carlon said. “We just didn’t get it done today. We had some awful easy shots that we didn’t hit today and we didn’t shoot free throws well.”

“I thought the key today was our defense,” Davenport coach Jim Stinson said. “We went to a straight man defense in the second half. They did get a few scores against our reserves towards the end, but I thought our starters did a great job.”

Other highlights: Jennifer Stinson scored 10 of her gamehigh 23 points in the second quarter.

Melissa Mitchell and Nicky Barlow returned to Rainier’s starting lineup after visiting the hospital Wednesday because of illness.

The Mountaineers outrebounded the Gorillas 37-25, but only made 9 of 19 free throws.

Tekoa-Oakesdale 61,

St. George’s 60 (OT) Key to the game: The Dragons’ (25-3) Chrissy Peterson was called for a lane violation with T-O’s Heather Brandt at the free-throw line for a one-andone. The Nighthawks led 57-56 in overtime with 56 seconds left. Brandt missed the first free throw, but hit the next two after the lane violation to give the Nighthawks a 59-56 lead the Dragons couldn’t overcome.

Other highlights: Shortly thereafter, with T-O holding a 61-59 advantage, Peterson stole the ball and had an open layup. But on the way to the basket, she was whistled for carrying the ball.

“I was worried about this game,” Dragons coach Ross Thomas said. “I knew they’d be tough because they match up so well against us.”

St. George’s Cara Longinotti finished with 24 points to lead all scorers. Peterson had 21 while Brandt led T-O with 19 points.

After the teams played to a 22-22 first-half tie, the Trojans built a late six-point lead and managed to hold off scrappy Morton.

Other highlights: If she keeps this up, Manson’s Katie Davis will clearly find herself on the State B all-tournament team. Davis pumped in 20 points while teammate Ann Flores threw in 14 to counter 17 points from Morton’s Sarah Coleman and 11 points from April Kenny.

Morton will face St. George’s at 3 p.m.

Other highlights: The Vikings’ Alex Dagnon picked up her fourth foul early in the third quarter after having scored just four points. However, Emily Ruff, Melissa Hendrick and Jennifer Oakerman countered Dagnon’s absence.

Klickitat 50, Darrington 42

Key to the game: Darrington’s fourth-period daring do came up a don’t as the Loggers’ (19-11) rally came up short against the Vandals (26-2).

Klickitat had a 33-23 lead at the end of three quarters before the Loggers, led by Lindsay Boyd, closed the gap to 39-36. From there though, Darrington went cold from the floor and the comeback ended.

Other highlights: Klickitat’s Jill Pimley is one of the main ingredients that makes the Vandals run. Her family is moving to Vancouver, Wash., and she has absolutely no interest in having her career at Klickitat end yet.

Klickitat will play Mossyrock at 1:30 p.m. today as those two teams entertain aspirations of a fifth-place finish.
