Vfw Post No. 889 Notes Anniversaries

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889 of Coeur d’Alene and its Ladies Auxiliary recently celebrated their 73rd and 71st anniversaries, respectively, by presenting awards to others as well as their own members.

Nurses Sue Trenkle and Sue DuBois were presented with a special plaque for the outstanding service Kootenai Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit provides local veterans.

Fifty-year pins were awarded to 12 post members and six auxiliary members, and one auxiliary member received a 60-year pin.

Jessica Dempster, who won first place in the VFW’s Voice of Democracy contest, presented her speech.

Quartermaster Jim Shepperd was master of ceremonies; event planners were Richard Hassenplug and Iris Buchanan. Post commander is Jean Holt; Marjorie Hogeweide is auxiliary president.

In addition, post and auxiliary members were honored by State Commander Walter Parker and National 14 District Council member Rancy Russell.

The Academy of Dance has been invited to send its director, Janet Wilder, and 10 upper-level students to represent the state of Washington at the Dance Excellence! ‘95 International Festival for Young Dancers, March 20-26, in Anaheim, Calif. The dancers will also perform at Disneyland.

The students, their hometowns and schools are: Jenny Sue Anchonodo, Coeur d’Alene, Lakes Middle School; Joelle Andres, Spokane, Mead; Camille Baldwin-Bonney, Spokane, East Valley; Amanda Diehl, Spokane, Evergreen Junior High; Molly Francis, Spokane, St. Mary’s School; and Elisha Gunn, Coeur d’Alene, homeschooled.

Amanda Lochmiller, Spokane, Horizon Junior High; Sarah Scales, Spokane, University; Emily Schmedding, Greenacres, Central Valley; and Alison Stewart, Cheney, Cheney High.

Whitworth College has received grants of more than $10,000 from First Interstate Bank, Foundation Northwest, Momentum and US West to fund the second year of Project Get Ready. The program is designed to give local “at-risk” ninth-grade students from School District 81 a taste of college life and encourage them to pursue higher education.

Jerry Peterson, Veradale, recently earned an associate degree in science nursing from Regents College, Albany, N.Y.
