Early Spring Strands Ice Fishermen

Compiled From Wire Services

Spring is in the air, and in the water, in the Russian capital.

At the end of an unusually mild winter, ice on rivers and ponds is breaking up early and increasing numbers of ice fishermen are floating away.

At least 10 Muscovites have been stranded on breakaway floes and required assistance in the past week, a newspaper reported Friday.

In a normal winter, ice fishing is safe until mid-March. But average temperatures in February were nearly 10 degrees warmer than usual.
