At Indian Wells, Calif., top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Chanda Rubin 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, while No. 2 Conchita Martinez and No. 3 Lindsay Davenport were upset in the quarterfinals of the Evert Cup.

Eighth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez, who won here in 1993, surprised Martinez 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 and No. 5 Naoko Sawamatsu got by Davenport 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

At Scottsdale, Ariz., Australian Mark Philippoussis defeated Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the MassMutual tennis tournament.

Top-seeded Todd Martin, No. 2 Jim Courier and Stefan Edberg also won.
