Andreychuk Tipin Spoils Kidd’s Gem

Associated Press

Dave Andreychuk tipped a point shot past goaltender Trevor Kidd in the third period to cap Toronto’s rally and the Maple Leafs beat Calgary 3-2 at Toronto.

Calgary saw a one-goal lead snuffed out on another point-shot deflection earlier in the third period.

Randy Wood was in the middle of the slot when he got the blade of his stick on a shot by Garth Butcher to tie it 2-2 at 6:20.

Then Andreychuk scored his second goal of the night at 9:43 on the power play. He was parked on the lip of the crease and deflected Todd Gill’s shot over Kidd’s left pad.

Toronto’s rally spoiled a superb effort by Kidd, the former Spokane Chief standout, who saw his and Calgary’s five-game unbeaten streak come to an end.

Kidd was spectacular and had it not been for his performance, the Maple Leafs would have had a lead going into the third period instead of trailing. Toronto outshot Calgary 37-28.

Kidd’s night included two highlight-film stops on Doug Gilmour and a Mike Craig breakaway in the first period.

Zarley Zalapski and Theo Fleury scored for the Flames, who have 24 points for first place in the Pacific Division and a four-point lead on second-place San Jose.

Andreychuk opened the scoring on a backhand shot that Kidd misplayed. The puck hit his goal stick and trickled between his legs into the net for Andreychuk’s eighth goal at 15:31.

Other than that miscue, Kidd was at his best in the first two periods, and there was little he could do on the third-period deflections.Early in the third, Mike Ridley stepped into a slap shot at the top of the faceoff circle to Kidd’s right, but the goalie kicked the blistering shot away with his left leg.
