The Chewelah Cougars rebounded from a quarterfinal loss on Friday to beat Castle Rock 64-62 for the fourth-place medal Saturday at the Class A boys basketball tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

The Cougars (20-8) outrebounded Castle Rock (20-4), 53-29. Castle Rock had only seven offensive rebounds. Chewelah had 21.

Greg Rainer came off the bench to lead Chewelah with 17 rebounds.

“This whole tournament has been real physical,” the 6-foot-7 junior post said. “It was just a fight underneath.”

Castle Rock stayed close, as it has all tournament long, despite the rebounding deficiency. The Rockets have had shots at the buzzer in all four tournament games - with two rimming out for losses and two falling for victories.

But this was one that missed. Neal Kandoll, who got the Rockets into the medal round with a buzzer-beater on Friday, missed a 3-pointer at the end as the Cougars held on.

Chewelah’s Jeremy Landram led all scorers with 23 points. The junior guard finished with 100 points in the tournament.

Greg Belzer added 15 points for Chewelah. Rainer had 13 points.

The Cougars were knocked out of title contention by Cashmere on Thursday. They beat Port Townsend Friday in a lower-out game to earn a medal.

“We have done an outstanding job all year in bouncing back from a loss,” said Chewelah coach Drew Landram. “(Port Townsend) was the key game. The boys showed what they had.”

Jeff Keeley, Chewelah’s only senior, started his final game and got four points.

“These guys are going to be awesome next year,” said Keely in addressing the Chewelah fans during the medal presentation. “Good luck.”
