Maryland Coach Will Miss Finale

Associated Press

University of Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams is expected to celebrate his 50th birthday and the Terrapins’ regular-season finale in the hospital this weekend.

Williams was listed in fair condition Friday at Washington Adventist Hospital where he is recovering from a bout with pneumonia, said Robert Jepson, a spokesman for the hospital. Williams has been hospitalized since Tuesday.

University of Maryland officials originally thought Williams would be released by the end of this week, but now say they’re not sure when he’ll be back on the bench.

The Terrapins are scheduled to finish their regular season today at Virginia, where they could clinch the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament this month.

Billy Hahn and fellow assistant coaches Art Perry and Jim Patsos will continue to lead the team in Williams’ absence, university officials said.
