State Looking For Answers To Tribal Poverty

Associated Press

Economic conditions on Idaho’s Indian reservations are intolerable, says Gov. Phil Batt, who has committed to solving some problems.

In a March 1 letter to the tribes, Batt reiterated his support of the Legislature’s goal of bringing prosperity to the reservations.

He said he has a firm commitment from the Department of Commerce that it will help arrange business and job opportunities.

Batt said he also requested funding for a Native American Economic Development specialist. Greg Seibert will coordinate activities within the department.

“I want to emphasize the Department of Commerce will focus entirely on job creation and business opportunities on the reservations and nearby areas,” Batt wrote.
