Whitaker Wins Easily

Compiled From Wire Services

Julio Cesar Vasquez knocked down Pernell Whitaker with a left hand to the head in the fourth round, but for most of the fight, Whitaker was too slick for the Argentine and he won the WBA junior middleweight championship on a one-sided decision.

Whitaker used hard right jabs and accurate counter punches to build a big margin on his way to becoming the fourth man to win pieces of world championships in four weight classes.

The WBA Executive Committee voted to reject George Foreman’s appeal that it sanction his April 22 heavyweight fight against unranked Axel Schulz.

The committee backed up a 5-0 vote by the WBA’s Championships Committee Jan. 27 that Foreman make his first title defense against the top available contender or have his title recognition withdrawn.
