Bruins Dominate Louisville

Ed O’Bannon scored 25 points, and Tyus Edney added 20 as topranked UCLA dominated the inside in turning back Louisville 91-73 and winning its 11th straight game Sunday in Louisville, Ky.

UCLA (23-2) held a commanding 40-22 advantage in rebounds, and scored numerous baskets on putbacks and dunks. Toby Bailey had 11 rebounds to lead the Bruins’ inside attack that scored 25 second-chance points.

(3) Kansas 78, (18) Okla. St. 62

At Lawrence, Kan., Jacque Vaughn and Billy Thomas led the Jayhawks (11-3 Big Eight, 22-4) to their 42nd Big Eight Conference championship with a second-half charge that carried KU past the Cowboys (10-4, 20-9). Bryant Reeves went scoreless for the first time in his OSU career.

Hounded by 7-foot-2 Greg Ostertag, Reeves finished with no points, four fouls and six turnovers.

(8) UMass 79, Duquesne 53

At Philadelphia, Lou Roe scored 20 points as the Minutemen (24-4) manhandled the Dukes (10-17) in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.

(13) Virginia 92, (6) Maryland 67

At Charlottesville, Va., the Cavaliers’ (21-7) win created a four-way tie for first place for the first time in its 41-year history of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Wake Forest, North Carolina, Maryland (22-6) and Virginia all finished the regular season with 12-4 records.

That’s the way they will be seeded by tiebreakers when the conference tournament gets under way this week in Greensboro, N.C.

At East Lansing, Mich., the Spartans’ Shawn Respert scored 23 points, including four free throws in the last 30 seconds to help Michigan State move back into a tie for first place in the Big Ten with Purdue.

The Spartans (21-4) and Purdue are each 13-3 in the conference. Indiana fell to 9-7 in the Big Ten and 17-11 overall.

St. John’s 86, (23) Georgetown 77

At New York, freshman center Zendon Hamilton scored 21 points, 14 in the second half as the Redmen (7-11 Big East, 14-12) rallied for a win against the Hoyas (11-7, 18-8).

(24) Iowa State 79, Nebraska 77

At Lincoln, Neb., Julius Michalik hit a 14-foot baseline shot with 4 seconds left, lifting the Cyclones (6-8 Big Eight, 20-9) past the Cornhuskers (4-10, 17-12).
