Zulus End Boycott Of Parliament

Associated Press

Zulu nationalists said Sunday they would end their boycott of Parliament but demanded that President Nelson Mandela bring in international mediators to settle a dispute over regional autonomy.

Some 3,000 delegates to a special Inkatha Freedom Party conference voted to end the boycott.

Inkatha leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, facing a deadline this week for his lawmakers to return or lose their seats, argued that the party should give Mandela’s African National Congress time to resolve the impasse.

Buthelezi had ordered his 48 members to walk out of Parliament two weeks ago, saying Mandela was backing out on promises of mediation on autonomy for KwaZulu-Natal province.
