Eagles, Vandals Gain Spots In Ncaa Indoor Field

Eastern Washington and Idaho learned Monday that one of their athletes who had a provisional qualifying time has been selected for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday in Indianapolis.

Senior sprinter Joyce Rainwater will represent Eastern, while Idaho will send sophomore long jumper Niels Kruller.

Rainwater, selected the track Athlete of the Meet at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships in Moscow, Idaho, last weekend, set school, meet and Kibbie Dome records with a 200-meter clocking of 23.82 seconds.

That was just shy of the automatic qualifying mark, but good enough when the field of 16 was filled.

She has won eight Big Sky indoor and outdoor titles.

Kruller provisionally qualified earlier this season with a jump of 25 feet, 7 inches.

The native of Amesterdam, Netherlands, added to fill out the field in his event, has the eighth best jump in the NCAA this winter, and last weekend won the Big Sky Indoor title by more than a foot.

Basketball

The senior center from Medical Lake had 33 points and 12 rebounds as the Eagles finished fourth to qualify for this weekend’s conference tournament in Missoula.

EWU plays Montana, which had defeated the Eagles 17 straight times before last week’s loss in Cheney.

In earlier games, Jantsch downed Sunnyside 58-52 and Tacoma 75-47. Tommy Rainwater averaged 22 points per game and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Four teammates - Mike Buck, Richard McGinnis, Dennis Moeckel and Duane Moses - were selected to the all-tournament teams.

The University of Washington women climbed three spots to No. 14 in this week’s Associated Press poll while Washington State and Montana each picked up one vote.

College of Eastern Utah men’s coach Ronnie Stubbs has resigned after more than eight seasons.

He had a 164-109 record.
